=============

What if you weren't actually Revan?

What if Revan died in the attack, and you're a clone, or a relative (sibling? cousin?) or even just a random Jedi?

If a clone, then would you be a clone the Jedi Council made to try stopping Malak, or would you be a clone that Revan made as a Palpatine-style just-in-case body-swap thing, that the Jedi Council found? Revan could have not quite worked out the body swap Sith sorcery thing, hence why he didn't jump to the body, but had it ready because he was close. Bastila wouldn't even necessarily know you weren't actually Revan, she'd just know what the Council told her. Malak would think you were actually Revan, because you look like him, and have his presence in the Force. But you're not, you're your own person, who carries the legacy/burden of Revan. How would you handle that? How would Meetra or the companions or anyone else handle that?

If a sibling/cousin, would the Jedi Council have kidnapped them? Would they already be a Jedi, and maybe not know their relationship? Or maybe a Sith that was captured and the Jedi found out about the relationship, and decided to use it? Cosmetic surgery? Twins would be a big stretch, but hey, Star Wars never cared much about that. However, a sibling close in age + nobody seeing Revan for a long time 'cause of the mask + "injuries" from the attack could explain some difference in appearance and sometimes siblings look a lot alike. The Council mind-wiping an innocent Jedi for this seems too Dark, even for them.

If a random Jedi, then you'd have volunteered to be mind-wiped. Why would the Council make someone who wasn't Revan think they weren't Revan, but look like Revan? Could be to draw out Malak? The plan the whole time was for Malak to learn that "Revan was still alive", even though Revan was dead, and expose himself? For what? It wasn't like the Jedi did anything when Malak showed up.

The visions would have to come from somewhere? If a clone, Revan could have been programming the clone over time with some of his memories, so they could come from that. Or, maybe Revan could have implanted them in Bastila before dying.

What if the dying Revan transferred himself into Bastila's mind, and that's where the visions are coming from. And the Jedi Council is TERRIFIED of Revan running Bastila's body. Revan canonically, at least before Kreia's comments in KOTOR 2, wasn't necessarily uber-powerful-Force-demigod like Anakin was made out to be. And even in KOTOR 2, "heart of the Force" doesn't necessarily mean super-powerful in an abilities kind of way, it could mean special in other ways. Revan was a skilled combatant (as evidenced by beating Malak, Mandalore, and the Echani guy) but his main strength was tactical. Bastila could actually be stronger in the Force than Revan, and have Battle Meditation. Revan+Bastila melded together, with Revan's mind in control, could be WAY worse than the first incarnation of Revan. So the Jedi Council poison pills Revan. They get a Jedi volunteer to be reconstructed as Revan, and send them off with Bastila (who has no clue, she thinks the main character actually is Revan). The idea is that Revan will eventually try to jump back into "his" body. The surprise is that the Jedi volunteer has been trained and programmed to (what? accept Revan then resist him? Fat chance. Be impossible to jump into somehow, thereby killing Revan's essence in a failed transfer? just pass out when this happens? die?) But Revan never takes the leap (he caught onto it? he's happy with how things are going? he wants to keep Bastila? maybe Bastila's actually able to suppress him?) and they run into Malak, who things this really is Revan, and Bastila confirms it, having been duped herself, so now this volunteer really thinks he's Revan.

What if Revan is playing the *really* long game? He lets everything play out, seeing that fake-Revan plus the companions are going to end up finding the Star Forge. Then when goody-two-shoes fake-Revan goes to fight Malak, he takes over Bastila (who puts up a hell of a fight, but he's Revan so she loses). Then when fake-Revan comes out of the Star Forge after defeating Malak to reunite with his sweety Bastila, it's actually Revan running Bastila's body. All Revan has to do is off this poser and he'll have Bastila's Battle Meditation at his command, and he's on the Star Forge ready to take back over. These idiots have taken him EXACTLY where he wanted to be, and have done all the hard work for him. (If fake-Revan had lost to Malak, then Revan-as-Bastila would have just killed Malak himself, same result just a bit more effort, and why take the risk if these losers will do it for him.) But now, fake-Revan has to fight Revan-as-Bastila, but not actually kill Bastila because he's in love with her, and he has to come to terms with the fact that he's really so not Revan and the real Revan is totally out of his league. Malak was kinda tough, sure. But this is *Real Revan* he's fighting now and it isn't just a different ball game, it's an entirely different sport. But he's determined, and turns out to be tougher than anyone thought, and real Bastila helps out by not giving up and still fighting Revan, and together they vanquish real Revan. Maybe something on the Star Forge helps with that? We surely didn't see everything on it during the game, there's likely some Rakatan gizmos they could utilize. And at the end, Revan (who turned out to be truly evil, lost, and unredeemable) is dead, and fake-Revan and Bastila are all cuddly, and heroes of the Republic.

Okay, here's a plan:

The fight on Revan's flagship goes pretty much like in Revan's Surrender, except that Revan is evil the whole time. Really dark, not even a shimmer of light, as he's the Big Bad through this entire linked playthrough.

Why doesn't Revan anticipate Malak's attack? Could be he was just distracted by the Jedi, but Revan getting that distracted that easy isn't in character. What about if Revan is anticipating the betrayal, just wasn't sure when it'd happen, but has Bandon on his side. Has already talked to Bandon about Malak's impending betrayal, and promised Malak's position to Bandon when Bandon stops Malak's betrayal. Is a good test of Bandon's strength, but even if Bandon fails it should give Revan enough time and warning to deal with Malak. But Revan doesn't anticipate Bandon taking Malak's counteroffer to stick with Malak and betray Revan. Revan is super pissed about Bandon's betrayal in the moment before his "death".

At the end of the fight, when Bastila is trying to save Revan's life, she's confused because his body's physical life continues to fade, while his spirit is recovering. She doesn't realize this, but that's because he's transferred into her. She slaps some neural regulators on Revan in an attempt to stabilize his physical condition. They were part of the plan to abduct him, as they also work as suppressors. But in this case, she wants them to keep him alive. It won't work, but she doesn't know that.

She tries to exit the bridge, but the door she came in is sealed. She considers lightsabering it open, but that'll take awhile. She spots a small side door and tries it. Turns out to be Revan's private chamber. There are Sith artifacts and tapestries and such. Revan's clone body is in what looks like a life support system integrated with a repulsorlift platform. She tosses a tapestry over the clone body, not knowing what it is but knowing it looks important, and heaves Revan's actual body on top of it. Then she does the change-clothes-run-to-her-ship thing, using the platform to push Revan's body with the clone body concealed.

On her ship, she tosses Revan's body into a carbonite freezer (ala The Mandalorian) to stablize him, not being able to read any life signs (because it is dead) but still feeling his presence (in her, but she doesn't realize that). The carbonite thing was part of the kidnap plan, that's why it is there. She shoves the platform/statis chamber holding the clone body into the back and takes off as Revan's ship blows up.

On Dantooine, the Jedi Council (is Atris there this time? Any of the others?) send Bastila for medical treatment and take both bodies. The find out Revan's body is dead, realize Revan is in Bastila, and get super freaked that Revan is going to take over Bastila and use her Battle Meditation against them. If Atris is there, she wants to kill Bastila right away. (How many Jedi have we sent to their deaths fighting this monster? What is the sacrifice of one more, if it means victory? Did she not just willingly go on perhaps the most risky mission we could have sent her on? She has already chosen to accept death in order to defeat Revan. Let us honor her choice now. We must do it quickly, so he cannot react.) But the others want to save her. They examine the clone body and find it isn't capable of sustaining Revan, at least not in any sort of powerful fashion (think B4 from Star Trek. Maybe they say the body is alive, but dead in the Force, Revan going into it would leave him powerless).

Actually, the above is too clean. There should be LOTS of opinions about what's going on, including at least:
Only Atris should think the last. Nobody else will believe it. Surely they'd sense that. (They don't, because Revan is being coy, and learned how to shield himself from his time with Kae/Kreia.) Atris is convinced, though, and wants to kill Bastila straightaway. So Atris is the only one who is right, and that's part of what pushes her farther to the Dark Side (she won't find out she's right until between games, but that's still early enough for it to affect her in KOTOR II, especially if she's already drifting that way because all this spurred her to start investigating Sith sorcery)

I don't have to resolve this uncertainty for the reader. I can use it to leave the reader unclear about exactly what is going on until the Star Forge.f
Atris is insistent that anything they tell Bastila might be perceived by Revan, and refuses to back down on that point. They're at a loss on all this Sith Sorcery that Revan is using, and honestly don't know how active or conscious Revan might be within Bastila. So they decide not to take any chances, and to assume Revan hears and understands anything they say to Bastila. Which is good for them, because he does. He's 100% alive and aware, just biding his time. They speculate that Revan didn't jump to the clone because Bastila interrupted him by trying to save his life and creating the Force Bond. Speculate he may have been trying to jump when she connected to him, and that's why the Force Bond is between Bastila and the clone body. And that Revan may still use the Force Bond to jump into the clone. He won't, he's perfectly happy where he is.

Why would they think he'd jump to the clone instead of taking over Bastila? Maybe they just sort of assume it. Why else would he have a mindless clone sitting around? Maybe they talk themselves into thinking that he's unable to take over Bastila. (Might be good to have Atris strongly argue both this points, based on her oh-so-superior knowledge, so that after he DOES take over Bastila it is mostly Atris' fault, creating guilt that Revan can use to drive her further to the Dark Side via her trying to increase her understanding of Sith sorcery to see where she went wrong) Or that he couldn't jump to his clone because it was inactive and in stasis, but if they bring it out of stasis he'll try. They could think (is Trask there and part of this?) that its Force powers will take time to manifest after Revan jumps into it. So they want Revan to jump into it, and they want to subdue/defeat him after he does, but before the new body can become strong.

What does Revan really want at this point? He wants (1) Malak dead and (2) everything rearranged so he can use a chain of clones for immortality. Which means getting back to the Star Forge, which his other clone body is. So he decidedes to use these idiots to accomplish all of that. He actively chooses to feed them the visions, bit by bit, to guide them little-by-little to the Star Forge, all the while preparing them to face Malak. His whole plan is to have them do his dirty work, and also be his personal taxi service, so that he ends up where he wants to be, with everything arranged the way he wants it to be. He's winning. He's in control. What's the hurry?
The original plan was (officially) to capture Revan and use his memories/knowledge to help the Jedi/Republic. Some (Atris, Vrook, maybe Kavaar?) were pretty on board with just straight-up killing him. But Jedi don't do assassinations, so they had to at least pretend to go along with the "capture" idea. This subtext could be ongoing. Some (Vandaar, Dorak, El, who else?) might still want to do some variation of the capture plan. And now that Revan's actual body is dead, isn't that even more likely? He either takes over Bastila (which they're not sure is even possible) or jumps to the clone (which they think will weaken him). Either way, he's a lot more under their control than when he was standing on the deck of his flagship, surrounded by his soldiers. So it hasn't exactly been clean, but they've made progress on the capture thing, right? That faction of the Council will want Trask to subdue the clone, or at least make sure it doesn't cause trouble. The other faction will want him to kill it when it wakes up. Maybe somebody raises the question of what if Revan doesn't jump, but the clone is out of stasis. Might it wake up on its own. If so, who/what would it be? That might given the "kill it" faction some hesitation - if it is dead, it is no longer a lure for Revan. So the orders they give to Trask may be very, very muddy. If Revan *does* jump to it, then he's not in Bastila anymore. So Bastila is free and clear and able to help Trask decide what to do. So the compromise might be, if it wakes up and is dangerous or threatening, kill it. If not, get it to Bastila and she can help figure out what to do next. And if Trask and Bastila have an off-the-record conversation on the Endar Spire, that might muddy it up even more and make saving it seem more like the thing to do, to the point that Trask would sacrifice himself for it.
In any case, the Council decides to lie to Bastila and tell her that Revan survived, but his mind was lost and they inserted a new personality, and it would take some time to take hold. And that they have to keep it moving so Malak doesn't lock in on it. What they really want is to keep Bastila moving so Malak can't lock in on her, and they're hoping that Revan jumps to the clone body. They assign Trask Ulgoto guard the body. They task Bastila with checking in on the clone regularly (telling her it is a reprogrammed Revan), and Trask with doing anything he can to facilitate/encourage Revan to transfer to it. And to immediately kill Bastila if Revan takes her over? Or do they think that impossible? Nobody can know that Trask is working for the Council. The whole point is to make him seem like an ordinary Republic grunt that would be easy for Revan, even in the clone body before it gains much power, to kill. Trask is essentially playing a role as a decoy to tempt Revan. And Bastila can't be in on the plan, or else Revan might perceive it.

Revan, of course, is no idiot. Why's he going to jump into his clone body when it is surrounded by enemies, when he's doing just fine, and he knows he has more clones waiting around anyway? He knows the Council has lied to Bastila that Revan is alive, and that they'll get stuck in this lie. He has a pretty good idea what's going to happen with the clone. He doesn't know how it'll play out, but his advantage is in waiting, so he waits.

Consider interspersing the narrative with some of Revan's thoughts, maybe bolded and italicized and even with margins to set them apart from everything else. That way, I get to give his perspective. Except would that give away what's going on, and I'd rather set up for the real reveal on the Star Forge (Malak's reveal on the Leviathan being in error)?
Maybe this is where Atris actively starts toward the Dark Side. She's had attitudes that direction for awhile (as evidenced at the Exile's trial), but this is where the starts doing things. They didn't even know what Revan did was possible, either the clone bit or the body jumping bit, but here it is. So she starts investigating Sith knowledge, supposedly to protect against it. (Atris: How can we defend against an enemy whose capabilities we don't even know? Vandaar: This is a dangerous path. The Dark Side is subtle and tempting. Atris: I do not wish to possess their power, I merely want to understand what they are capable of, so that we're prepared to fight it. I'm doing this for all of us.)

Instead, the freaking clone WAKES UP ON ITS OWN when the Endar Spire is attacked. As they'd speculated, it was SUPPOSED to be dead in the Force, until activated by being taken out of the stasis chamber. It was always going to take some time for its Force abilities to manifest. This was supposed to happen after Revan occupied it, so that he could direct its development. But what nobody anticipated was that with nobody controlling it, it developed on its own, imprinting off those around it, primarly Trask (as he was closest) but also off everyone on the Endar Spire to some degree. So it ends up not being Trask's mind in Revan's body, although it is something close to that, but also influenced by everyone on the Spire. It is kind of a clone of the conglomorate crew of a Republic ship, which is pretty cool. But it wasn't completely a blank slate before, it is at least partially influenced by Revan, so there's some of him in there too. Ends up being his better traits, plus Trask's.

Thoughts on Trask: this is my one chance to play the game as Trask Ulgo, so I don't want to make him someone he's not. But I can embelish a bit. The Jedi Council could be figuring out who they can trust to babysit the clone body, and kill it if necessary. They're hesitant to send a Jedi - Revan was superb at manipulating Jedi and they're not certain that, even in the new clone body, he couldn't do it again. And they're also a little embarrassed to admit to a Jedi that they're lying to other Jedi, and uncertain if whomever they told would keep the secret, or see it as the Council betraying the Order. And finally, they can't use a Jedi because Jedi don't kill their prisoners, and they need someone they can count on to kill it if need be. One of the Council members says they know someone. - He comes from a noble family on Alderaan, but rather than relying on his family's prominence chose to enlist in the Republic Fleet with no special treatment. - How do you know him? - He was borderline Force Sensitive. We considered him for Jedi training, decided he did not meet the standard, but I continued to monitor him in case his Force abilities manifested beyond what we anticipated. They did not, but I found him to be loyal, trustworthy, and committed to duty. I believe we could rely on him in this matter. - What's his name? - Trask Ulgo. - Meet with Trask Ulgo, then ensure he is assigned to the ship we place Bastila and the clone on. I'll also need to answer why Trask doesn't immediately kill the clone when it wakes up. Need to watch the beginning of the game again to make sure I don't misrepresent anythin (see below)g, but maybe Trask figures out this isn't Revan, or at least Darth Revan, and let's it live. Could even do a fanfic where Trask is deciding the whole time what to do, and a few times considers shooting the clone in the back, but eventually becomes convinced the clone is not only not evil, but must be saved.

First conversation with Trask on the Endar Spire:
Based on the above, Trask could have been feeling out the clone, trying to get a sense of him. Maybe deciding whether to immediately kill him or not. Some of what Trask says is nonsensical: everyone on the mission swore a special oath to protect Bastila? Seriously? Other parts suggest he's testing the clone to see if he shows signs of recognition or situational awareness. Also, standing face-to-face with the clone doesn't give Trask much advantage, and if he's been informed that the clone is (or could be) very capable and dangerous, it makes sense that he wouldn't just shoot - even unarmed, the clone might still be more than a match for Trask. So even if Trask's first instinct is to kill, he still needs an opportunity. The first conversation could have been him stalling, looking for a way to get a clean shot, and during the conversation he begins to suspect the clone isn't actually who the Council was afraid he would be.

Also, clearly nobody anticipated a surprise attack by the Sith, and the situation is indeed very dire. Trask may have truly been desperate to help Bastila, and willing to accept help from the clone, even if the clone was otherwise dangerous. Trask could have planned to use the clone to help him get to the bridge in an honest attempt to help Bastila, with the idea that he'd kill the clone when its usefulness ran out.

Trask did have a clean kill shot in the first room, when the clone turned and walked to the footlocker. Trask doesn't take it, instead allowing the clone to get gear including weapons. And Trask says the door is locked (which the main character can confirm by trying to open it), but Trask just came in through it. If it had to be unlocked, didn't he just do that? And what protocol locks a ship's defenders in their rooms? It is reasonable to assume that Trask set the door to lock behind him before opening it, to lock the clone in if it turned out to be dangerous. So by the time they leave the room, Trask has chosen to let the clone gear up, and also chosen to let it out. There is, however, a second locked door that Trask has to slice through. Was the first one a test, to see what the clone would do given (apparent) freedom?

They then encounter Sith. Trask positions the clone to be in front in the fight. This could be another test. If the clone refuses to fight the Sith, or turns to attack Trask, he can still shoot it.

However, Trask does put the clone in the lead, where he could shoot it if needed. That pretty much continues through to the bridge. They encounter a Jedi and Dark Jedi fighting (both end up dead) but that could have been a revealing moment for Trask, if he were observing the clone.

As they're leaving the bridge, the encounter Darth Bandon, and Trask sacrifices himself for the clone. This deserves some explanation, and probably affects the earlier fanfics. Why does Trask do this? How much does he know? If all he's been told is "if this thing wakes up, kill it", then letting it live because he senses no malice from it could be explained. Killing something that's trying to kill you is one thing, killing a defenseless person is another thing entirely. But sacrificing himself? That's a huge step, and doesn't make much sense without some backstory. The logical thing is for them to take Bandon on together. Especially if Trask is just using the clone to help him get to Bastila and protect her. And even if he thinks the clone is either an ordinary crew member, or just a random person. Trask, as a Republic ensign, would focus on fulfilling his duty, and expect others to do the same. And at the moment, duty would seem to demand them sticking together, whether that's to attack Bandon or try to flee from him. Why would Trask sacrifice himself? Did the Council think the clone could wake up on its own and be useful? Maybe the "could be their version of Revan, on the Jedi's side" idea got kicked around by the Council and they relay it to Trask as a possibility? Maybe they're just vague and Trask has a sense this person is important? But they have to have prepared him to kill it, so getting from there to sacrificing himself for it is a giant leap. Could Bastila or one of the other Jedi have said something to Trask during the Endar Spire's mission before the Sith attack that tilted him that way? Bastila will think this is reprogrammed Revan, right? Presumably waiting for the programming to kick in and him to wake up. From her perspective, it is on their side and very valuable. So maybe Trask got mixed messages. The Council could tell him "kill it", Bastila could tell him "protect it", and he has to make a call. Maybe Bastila wasn't supposed to talk to Trask about it (either she was explicitly forbidden, or else they just tried to arrange things so it wouldn't happen) but then it happened anyway. If that's it, then Bastila will have (perhaps inadvertantly) saved the clone's life before she ever meets it.

Taris happens. Bastila is freaked when Revan shows up to "rescue" her at the swoop race, but she's been told that's really Revan. She does pretty much what she explained in Training Begins.

Back on Dantooine, the Jedi Council are confused and conflicted. They sense Revan still in Bastila. But they don't know how the clone is an independent, living entity. They didn't think that possible. They explain it all to Bastila as a Force Bond, but they're really not sure. The clone does share the visions, so maybe it really is a Force Bond of some sort, maybe from the connection between Revan and the clone that already existed.

Revan still could have hopped into the clone at any time. But he still doesn't want to. Things are going his way, and he can take over the clone at any moment of his choosing if he needs to. But Bastila's body is actually more powerful in the Force than his own was, or the clone. His strength was always his mind, which will be intact in whatever body he's in. So he has designs on staying in Bastila and take her over, but he doesn't see a need to yet. And he likes how things are going with the clone. The possibility of the Jedi Council being backed into a corner where they have to declare Revan as a Good Guy intrigues him. So he's playing the long game. But nobody understands that.

So the Council decides the clone is an independent thing of its own, and that Revan maybe can't hop to it, or maybe is ineffectually stuck in Bastila forever. Maybe Revan is dead really, but only an echo, whatever Sith sorcery Revan was trying didn't work. (Atris can argue strongly, over the objections of others, that Revan is either dead or stuck. Her research shows that he can only take over a mindless body for any significant amount of time, which is why the clone was the way it was. Any body with a mind will reject him. So now that it has its own mind, he can't jump to it, and he can at most, if still alive, temporarily affect Bastila. But he's probably dead, killed by Bastila's own mind after this much time, and what they're feeling is an echo. She's wrong about all that, of course, furthering her guilt afterward.) So they want to use Revan's memories to find the Star Forge, and those memories exist only in Bastila, not the clone. But they can't say that out loud, just in case. So they decide to train the clone, because if they can have their own Revan, then hooray. Revan's strength working for them could really tilt the war in their favor.

Anyway, they train it, and use the Force Bond + Revan-in-Bastila to find the Star Forge, because they're desperate. And the further it goes, the happier Revan is to *not* jump to the clone.

Revan only comes close to overplaying his hand once, on Kashyyyk, when now-Darth Bandon and crew ambush Tevano and Bastila. (Should be only the two of them in the party, Zaalbar got stuck at the Wookie Council-whatever-place and they don't add anyone else.) Anyway, Bandon has set up an ambush for Tevano in the Shadowlands where he can't get any help. Bastila and Tevano bond a little on the way down - this is after Tatooine, and things ended well with Bastila's mother, so they're feeling a little sentimental, and the ride down the lift thing takes a long time, which gives them both a rare opportunity to take a moment for themselves away from everyone, and also a chance to appreciate the beauty of the forest. Probably some symbolism about the height of the trees, and not being able to see the top or the bottom, but appreciating the part they can see, the middle. For Bastila, this could be a formative moment where she's able to put Revan's past behind (she still thinks Tevano is Revan), stop worrying about what Revan might turn back into, and just appreciate the man she's with for who he is.

Anyway, they get ambushed at the bottom. Bandon focuses on Tevano, who has until now only fought the one Sith ambush on Tatooine (I'm right that he hasn't fought any other actual Sith yet, aren't I?). So Tevano has a rough time, gets life drained and force pushed and generally beat up, struggling to just stay alive. The two Dark Jedi focus on Bastila. Tevano is at first too occupied with Bandon to even glance Bastila's way. But when he gets force pushed and knocked back into a tree, he looks over and sees that she has dispatched both of them. And not in a nice, clean, lightsaber-through-the-heart way. No, they're basically chopped up, with brutal deep gashes. Mabe some dismemberment. And Bastila is charging Bandon.

While Tevano watches, Bastila basically makes him look like an idiot child in lightsaber combat with super aggressive, anger-fueled techniques that are quite un-Bastila-like. Then instead of finishing him with the lightsaber, she grabs him around the head and close-range lightnings him to death. Eyes rolling, spasms and seizures, slobber and snot. She bodily lifts him off the ground (force-assisted, presumably) and looks into his erratically jerking eyes as he dies, says a word, and throws his body to the ground.

Then she steps back and almost collapses herself. She's shocked at what she's done, says she lost control of herself. Wonders if this is what being taken over by the Dark Side is like. Tevano reassures her, but admits to himself (not to her!) that he's making excuses for her because he's falling in love with her. Doesn't want to admit to himself the word he thinks he heard her say: Traitor.

In fact, Revan was so pissed at Bandon he briefly took over Bastila, long enough to kill Bandon. But neither Tevano nor Bastila figure that out.

This sequence hits the identity question from a different angle. While Bastila thinks (incorrectly) that Tevano is Revan, she has ACTUAL REVAN LIVING IN HER HEAD. Tevano has seen this come out now, but doesn't understand what's going on. And for that matter, Bastila doesn't understand what just happened to her. So they both have questions about her identity. Tevano in particular has been practically whiplashed between this empathetic, attractive woman who suddenly transformed into into a monster, and then back into a confused, vulnerable person.

After the reveal, Revan is *thrilled* to not jump to the clone. Because now he's getting taken to the Star Forge by Malak, which is where he wants to be anyway. And the clone is getting formalized and known amongst more people as Redeemed Revan. Now, if only this idiot clone would actually kill Malak for him, so everybody thinks that Revan killed Malak and saved the galaxy...

Bastila and the clone fall in love, smoochy smoochy, and the clone (who Bastila *still* thinks is Revan and who himself thinks is Revan after the reveal) kills Malak. During the fight, he notices that Malak heals via the battery Jedi, and both their minds and energy is extracted in the process.

While he's fighting Malak, Revan takes over Bastila. She puts up a hell of a fight, but he's Revan. He uses her Battle Meditation against the Republic (cue Vandaar's lines about Bastila using her Battle Meditation against them) and has the Republic Fleet almost defeated when the clone comes in after killing Malak.

This is all awesome for Revan. He was happy to let the clone take the first shot at Malak. If he'd failed, Revan would have done it himself. But why take the risk unnecessarily. Now the clone is beat up and exhausted, and Revan is fresh and ready. Revan wants the galaxy to know that Revan killed Malak, because he doesn't want his own legacy to end as "killed by apprentice." But he doesn't want the clone (who still thinks he's Revan) actually living openly as Revan, because the clone won't have his (actual Revan's) agenda. Also, the idea that Revan could fall to the Dark Side, which most in the Republic equate to being anti-Republic, then return to the Light Side, which most in the Republic equate to being on the Republic's side, works in Revan's favor. It creates some subconscious sympathy for the Sith, or at least makes them seem less evil and threatening, which Revan needs for the next phase of his plan. So the clone has done everything Revan needed, and keeping it around any longer would be detrimental. Time to kill it, then return to using Battle Meditation to finish killing off the Republic Fleet, including Vandaar and the other Jedi that came to the battle.

Revan's goal is to defeat the Republic for Vitiate. He'd love to betray Vitiate, but he has no angle to do it yet, so that's still something he's looking for opportunity on. For now, He's straight-up acting as Vitiate's apprentice. So what is his plan? One possibility is to jump into the fresh clone he has on the Star Forge and return as Revan. He'd need to kill Bastila, but okay. Another possibility is to present himself as Bastila Shan, war hero. He could say that after Revan's victory over Malak, in which Revan was also tragically killed, she was able to use the power of the Star Forge to shut down the Sith Fleet. She only regretted not being able to do it fast enough to save the Republic Fleet. Then launches a surprise attack on Coruscant. Maybe would say Revan was just injured and being tended to (hence why he's not announcing with her), not killed, then jumps into the new clone body. Doesn't really matter, this won't happen so I don't need to completely decide this.
Revan explains at least some of this in a bad-guy-reveals-all speech, really denigrating the clone as an imperfect vessel, a failed experiment, a waste, and that he's found a superior body and he's going to be greater than he ever was. They fight, and it is super gritty. The clone doesn't want to kill Bastila (he still loves and wants to save her) but needs to get Revan out of her. Revan has no restraints, and is super denigrating about how weak and useless and inferior the clone is. And he's no Revan, and he'd absolutely lose in the end. But he gets help.

This is the second big reveal, the traditional big in-game reveal being a big misunderstanding. This is when the clone finds out what he really is. Maybe can include dialog kinda like this:
Revan: "Give up. You're nothing. You're an empty shell, a blank copy, imprinted by the fading echo of a dead Republic crew."
Clone: "You're wrong. I'm a template of you, but without the darkness that has consumed you. I'm the Revan that could have been. But I'm more than just that. I'm Trask Ulgo, Ensign with the Republic Fleet. I'm every crewmember of the Endar Spire. I'm their duty, purpose, and determination, mixed with your strength and will. And whatever you intended me to be, I've become more. I'm Tevano." (or do I save this for the final fight in the last fanfic?)
Revan-in-Bastila, near the end of the fight: "Bastila is dead. Only I remain." Clone: "There is no death. There is the Force." It was the only retort he could muster. He could only hope Revan was bluffing. Wait, that's it, he thought. The Force. The Force Bond. It wasn't to Bastila's body, it was to her mind. Maybe he could use it to reach her. (He does, and the Bond also connects to Revan, it has to for the visions to work, so they're three-way connected. Bastila and Trevalgo mentally subdue Revan long enough to get Bastila's body into the machine)
The clone eventually subdues/tricks her into the one remaining battery chamber in Malak's Star Forge room and uses to to suck Revan out of Bastila. Maybe that means he sucks Revan into himself and has to have a mental battle with Revan, which he wins? Anyway, Revan is defeated and Bastila is cleansed. She uses Battle Meditation for the Republic (cue Vandaar's other lines), the Star Forge is destroyed, and they live happily ever after.

Well, not so much.

For one thing, Tevano and Bastila will be hella confused. They both thought Tevano really was Revan after the Malak reveal. Bastila thought it because the Jedi Council told her so, and Tevano thought it because Malak said it and Bastila confirmed it. Not to mention Jolee, HK-47, the black market guy, and the Kashyyyk computer. So he hasn't really had a chance to come to terms with being Revan. Bastila had been keeping the "Tevano is Revan" secret for a long time, and went through the whole emotional thing of admitting it to Tevano, only to find out it isn't true. But what is true? Was Revan telling the truth, or was he lying? They've both been lied to by just about everybody. They have each other, except that they're each not sure who the other is once you pile this new development on top. So lots to sort out, and that deserves a story on its own.
And for another thing, Revan isn't really dead yet. This is Revan's Star Forge, after all. Who thought he'd have only one clone body? He jumps into a clone nobody knew about on the Star Forge, and escape pods to the Rakata planet before the Star Forge explodes (or is the clone body in the Rakatan Temple or somewhere else on the planet? That might be better.)

Revan, behind the scenes, in the "between games" time, figures out the Rakata plague was a genetic thing that cut them off from the Force, and figure out how to fix it. He builds a Rakatan army for himself reminiscent of the Infinite Empire Days. And, he's pulling strings, pitting Kreia's Sith against the Jedi Council, feeding Kreia all kinds of half-truths that she swallows whole, using them to kill each other.

Revan wants all this because he's serving Vitiate. Not as a mind-controlled loser, but as a true apprentice. Vitiate's only actual apprentice. That's where he learned most of the techniques he's using. He was tasked with prepping the Republic for a True Sith takeover. Maybe after that, it had been promised to him? (Revan).

Bastila and the clone learn/sense Revan isn't really dead and (with everyone still thinking the clone is really Revan) fake him going off after the True Sith. They feel a little bad deceiving Canderous, and leaving T3 and HK-47 the way they do. But it has to be convincing, because they suspect Revan is watching. How do they find out? The Force Bond should still be active so if Revan is using the Force at a distance to manipulate people like Kreia, Atris, and even the Jedi Council, Bastila and the clone could get visions again and put the pieces together.

Alternatively, Bastila and Tevano are lying low, trying to sort out their own lives. And then Revan steals the Hawk (somehow? has HK-47 do it? A Rakatan, or small team of them? Maybe he can give orders to HK-47 remotely?). T3 ends up on the Hawk, either purposefully or by accident. Revan deceives Canderous and crashes the Hawk, all as a setup for Kreia. What he really wants is the Sith and Republic to finish each other off so he can report back to Vitiate that everything is prepped for the invasion. So he sets things up such that T3 and Kreia will meet, and T3 knows just enough to make Kreia think that Revan went off after the True Sith to defeat them. Deceiving Canderous is just backup reinforcement for this. Revan would have to come out of hiding for this, but he could easily pretend to be Trevano. And Canderous probably doesn't know Trevano isn't Revan. All the bit about prepping the Mandalorians for an invasion is fake too. Revan intends to lead the Mandalorians, either through Canderous or himself if necessary. Maybe against Vitiate in concert with the Rakatans if Revan is betraying Vitiate. Could be that Revan is making the True Sith out to be this big threat not to defeat them for the Republic's sake, but for his own.

The clone is actually looking for Revan, waiting for him to reveal himself. Only he and Bastila know what's really up.

Does Revan do anything to summon/manipulate Meetra into coming back? Or does she run into one of GO-TO's bounty hunters and decide to come back on her own. If on her own, it is to Revan's great delight. She's his vehicle to finish off both the Sith and the Jedi. If a manipulation or summons, that's maybe even better for this shadow-lord, long-game-playing version of Revan. Also possible that Revan is manipulating GO-TO, or feeding info to GO-TO's bounty hunters, if I want to use them to draw Meetra back, but still connect it to Revan.

After KOTOR II, Meetra and Atton set out looking for Revan. Somehow (dunno how) they end up at the Rakatan planet. The Star Forge system actually isn't a bad place to look if you want clues. Maybe they follow Canderous' leads first and come up dry. Maybe Bastila is involved, or even there? They could go to her, as it will be known, at least in certain circles, that she and the clone were a thing, just everyone will still think the clone actually was Revan. Heck, Canderous could tell them that much, and he's already on the ship, so they may go straight to her. How would she react? If Meetra knew or even suspected that she was called back by Revan, then Bastila might be concerned if Meetra were being honest about being Light Side, or if she was an agent of actual Revan.

I'll have to explain why T3 doesn't reveal Revan's location. Maybe T3 really doesn't know. Clone could have deactivated T3, faked a crash, purposefully blew up HK-47 (it was actual Revan's droid, and therefore a threat) then had Bastila pick him up. Wouldn't even have to be on Nathema, although it could be. Set T3 to reactivate after some time had passed, all T3 knows is the ship is crashed, HK-47 is destroyed, and Revan is gone. Because T3 won't know about the clone thing either, he'll think the clone really is Revan still. The purpose of all that is to convince the actual Revan that the clone is gone. Maybe dead, maybe captured by the True Sith or somebody else, doesn't matter. Just need him to be convincingly gone. Then he can start secretly looking for real Revan.
It could be that they suspect Revan of being in the Rakatan temple the whole time. After all, they're not stupid, and if they think he's alive would they really not start looking in the last place he was at? The clone may go there and find out about Revan's army. That army won't fit in the temple, so it'd be easy to spot that stuff is going on. Probably Revan is building this army at a planetary scale anyway. But if the temple were completely sealed, maybe they can't get in. The ship-crashey field will be gone now, but if Revan has full control of the temple, it could have all sorts of Rakatan tech he can use. An impenetrable force field would actually be very likely. And could the ancient Rakata have built something INSIDE the planet that is even scarier than the Star Forge? Maybe Revan is using that (or planning to) as part of helping/betraying Vitiate.

Here's a video with a bunch of cinematics from the Star Forge system: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7F3tfKQbtg. My playthrough ideas page has a timeline tracing the history of the Rakata all the way from their first contact with the Kwa sometime before 36,000 BBY, to the Rakata encountering the True Sith, to Vitiate taking over the True Sith Empire. In case that's helpful.

So, if they've been trying to get to Revan all this time, maybe they think Meetra is their way in. Bastila tells her where the Star Forge system is (Canderous would know about it, but wouldn't necessarily have the hyperspace route.) Then she follows Meetra. Clone is already there. Revan drops the field to let in Meetra (and Atton? or is it Mical this time? I think Atton because he deserves to be redeemed after what I did to him in Connections). Bastila and the clone stealth in too.

Anyway, they end up at the Rakatan temple. That's where Revan reveals himself, tells his General "well done", and starts setting her up to be his apprentice (no Rule of Two yet? Breaking it, as Sith always do? Surely he's going to betray Vitiate, and that's what this secret army and Rakatan tech is about, but this Revan isn't doing it to save the Republic, he's doing it to rule it) Half-truths. Convincing. Meetra is buying into it. This is part of the long game, Revan fed Kreia stuff that would prep Meetra for this conversation. Revan can tell her that all this is about saving the Republic, even though that's a lie.

One option for what Revan tells Meetra: he discovered the True Sith and pretended to serve them, because there was no immediate way to defeat them. But he's been looking for an opportunity. Now he has it. The Republic and the Sith are both in shambles, thanks to Kreia and Meetra. He can let Vititate know the invasion is a go, and get the True Sith invasion fleet to Coruscant. Where he and Meetra ambush them with the Rakatan Fleet, defeat them, and kill Vitiate. Then they can use the Rakatan Fleet to defend the Republic against any further True Sith advances (the invasion fleet won't be every ship they have, after all) while they stablize the Republic. They'll have to be prepared to lead both the Jedi and the Senate, as all this will make people very fearful and reactionary, but it'll settle down and they can eventually hand power back over.
And a lot of that is true. Except for the bit about handing power back over. Instead, Revan plans to build the Republic into his personal war machine and take over first the True Sith territory, then the rest of the galaxy. He'll manipulate/fake some True Sith aggression to keep Meetra occupied with that. With any luck, she'll live the rest of he life not realizing she's been duped, and he'll hop into a new, younger clone body when needed. If his plan takes generations, fine. He's got time, now that he's got this version of immortality worked out. But it all sounds pretty good to Meetra, who is biased toward trusting Revan.
The clone shows up (and probably Bastila too, I think I like having her there for the finale). "Now there are two of them!" Meetra has to figure out which Revan to follow, the real one or the good one. She picks the good one. They kill Revan together. No more jumps, bye-bye bad guy.

Revan right before he dies: "You fools don't know what you've done. Under my rule, the Republic would have stood forever, stronger than it has ever been. Vitiate cares nothing for it. Now you'll face his wrath, and none of you can stand against him. I was your only hope."
This leaves Tevano, Meetra, Bastila, and Atton victorious for the moments, but aware of the True Sith, Vitiate, and the invasion plans, but only in a vague way. So maybe end with them going on a double-date to True Sith Land to check things out? That fulfills Kreia's prophecy, but in a different way than Kreia suggested. Which is probably about right.
How does Meetra feel about all this? She's been pretty broken, in large part by Revan's decisions. She's having her own battles with her past, who she was, and who she's become. If Revan sends a holo with a message for her, he can say (among other things) that he's learned it was the Jedi Council who cut her off from the Force. (Which Kreia then reinforces.) This would be part of turning her against the Jedi to help destroy them. But Revan should also say he's learned of a threat arising from his (and Malak's) Sith that must be faced, to help make sure she's fighting them too. Revan's goal is to use Meetra as a weapon against errbody. He can pretend that he's calling her to join him in facing all this, that he's learned so much from his mistake and has all this enlightenment. But he never means for Meetra to find him, at least not until she'd defeated everyone he wants killed. So he probably sets her on the path to get all caught up in the mix of everything, knowing that her personality, combined with the (mis)information he's given her, will send her down the path he wants her to follow.

Why does Meetra come back? She should be furious at Revan for Malachor V and everything that happened in the past. But also her tendancy to want to fix everything is still strong - maybe that's her dominant trait? - and she's hopeful that this new Revan is sincere. She's learned a lot from everything she went through. Maybe Revan did too? But then she gets back and Revan is nowhere to be found. And Kreia says he's left to face (or at least scout) these True Sith, after pulling Meetra back in? Once again, he's put her in the position to make all the hard, painful, traumatic decisions while he runs off to do his own thing. She should end KOTOR II absolutely seething at Revan. And then unload every bit of it on Tevano, thinking he's Revan.

Meetra could be unsure about everything even after Bastila and Tevano explain. She's just spent years in exile, in part due to being manipulated. Then she got manipulated into coming back. And then she ran into the queen of manipulation, Kreia. So she thinks Bastila and Tevano are telling the truth, but she's not certain. After all, Tevano looks and sounds exactly like Revan. Could he have made the holo, pretending to be Revan? He and Bastila are clearly anti-Sith, and also have had their issues with the Jedi. So Meetra could be unconvinced, and decides it is time for her to take charge of her own fate by setting things up where the truth will come out. The fact that it was a Rakatan means Revan is on Lehon. And maybe Tevano has already been there scouting? Anyway, Meetra says that Revan would be too strong for her to face on her own, but he will welcome her. So Tevano and Bastila should stow away on the Hawk with her, use her to get in, then they can defeat Darth Revan together. The plan is for Meetra to go in first, then them to sneak in after. But then Meetra reveals to Revan (who's playing nice) that Tevano and Bastila are there, and gets them captured. This is all a test. Revan is grateful for Meetra's loyalty and (with Bastila and Tevano present) presents his master plan for overthrowing Vitiate and ruling, now with Meetra, his true apprentice, by his side. This is when Atton, who was also stowed away without Tevano and Bastila's knowledge, shows up, frees Tevano and Bastila, and together the four of them kill Revan for good.

Given that my Tevano and my Meetra are both going to be Force-Jump-Sneak-Attack specialists, can I use this in the fanfic? Revan is distracted fighting Bastila and Atton. Circumstances of the fight have put Tevano and Meetra both at a distance, and on different sides of Revan. They both Force Jump Revan from opposite sides (flanking, therefore Sneak Attacks if this were in-game, I won't use game terminology in the fanfic, but I can describe the effect of a Sneak Attack in prose as them both trying to get through Revan's defenses by attacking in a surprise way from the side.) Revan stops Meetra (maybe Lightnings her out of the air?). He doesn't stop Tevano.
Is Atton present earlier for Meetra's rant? The fact that the Lost Jedi are rebuilding things need to be a secret. He could explicitly be identified as one of them, and he's going to stay on Coruscant to help, as Meetra says she must face Revan alone. Which is a lie, she planned for Atton to come along all along, as he's her insurance policy if Revan turns out to actually be evil.

All that gives some nice betrayal (and perceived betrayal) opportunities, and gives Meetra more agency in the whole thing. It can ultimately come down to Tevano vs Revan, but Meetra is a main character and needs a seat at the big kids table. This gives it to her, and gives me a chance to explore her feelings and character journey as well.

All that would give me opportunities for fanfics at:
- Revan's flagship, when the transfer occurs
- the Jedi Enclave, after Bastila gets back with Revan's body
- when they lie to Bastila, at the Enclave before the Endar Spire
- on the Endar Spire
- Enclave, after Taris
- When they encounter Darth Bandon
- Star Forge, after the Malak fight
- before KOTOR 2, when Meetra returns
- during KOTOR 2, after Meetra talks to Carth
- after KOTOR 2, Atton and Meetra (anyone else?) begin the search
- on the Star Forge planet, finale

Would the reader know what was going on the whole time? Or parts of it? Would be more fun if it were a surprise.
Could I hint/foreshadow enough without giving it all away?

Some more thoughts, trying to put the above together:
- fanfic one: Revan's flagship, transfer occurs, Bastila finds clone ---- Bastila is really confused. Is the body in the stasis chamber really Revan and the one on the flagship was a decoy? Was the on the flagship real? Are they both clones and Revan isn't really here? She can't sort it out, and she knows Malak is coming, so she just takes both. - fanfic two: Enclave: the Council is super confused. None of them can make sense out of this Sith sorcery. ---- Atris is the only one who gets it right. She says Revan is in Bastila, the clone is a spare for Revan to jump into, but he's not going to if he doesn't feel safe. She adamantly says kill Bastila right now. Nobody else agrees with her and they refuse to let her kill Bastila. ---- Various other factions. People contradicting themselves. Really muddy it up and present pretty much every possibility I can think of. At least one of these positions is that if this body has all Revan's capabilities without actually being Revan, this could win the war for the Republic. This possibility should be communicated to Trask, to increase his internal conflict. But all this confusion is in part to keep the reader in suspense. ---- Decide on the "lie to Bastila and use Trask" plan - fanfic three: on the Endar Spire. ---- start before Trevano wakes up, show what Trask is thinking and doing ---- maybe he was out of the room when the game begins because he was talking to Bastila? ---- he waffles back and forth about whether to kill it ---- ultimately decides not to, and in fact sacrifices himself to save it - fanfic four: Kashyyyk ---- start with Trevano and Bastila in the lift, going down ---- Zaalbar has been detained and, for this fanfic, they didn't get a 3rd party member ---- the wookie is ignoring them. They're on the other side of the lift and can talk privately ---- talk a little about it being nice to get a momentary break (lift takes a long time) ---- Tevano says he's glad they're getting a private moment. Wants to talk about Bastila's mother. ---- Gives nice supportive speech, empathetic, hopes Bastila is doing well with all that ---- Bastila receives it well. Apologizes for being so difficult much of the time. Pressure, and all that. ---- Bastila talks about how beautiful the trees are ---- They can only see the middle. Likens that to their mission. ---- Was set in motion by events that one of them had control over, or really even understand ---- No idea how it will end up. ---- Talks about finding moments of beauty within the chaos of what they're doing, here in the middle ---- For Bastila, internally, this a moment of accepting Tevano for who (she thinks) he is ---- She still thinks he's Revan ---- Decides to let go of his past, he's a new person now ---- Decides to let go of fears of the Dark Lord returning. Can't live in fear or dread. ---- Where does that leave her? It leaves her with very un-Jedi-like feelings for this man. ---- She knows a relationship is wrong according the Jedi code, but she's also having trouble resisting. ---- The first part of the fanfic is either narrative, or from Bastila's perspective ---- They leave the lift and begin going through the forest. In-game, they hardly go any distance, but for the fanfic they get some distance away ---- Ambushed by Darth Bandon and two Dark Jedi ---- See description in notes above for fight details ---- We now switch to Tevano's perspective ---- At end, they embrace (maybe Bastila is unsteady after the fight?) but not overtly romantic. No kiss. ---- end with Tevano knowing he's falling for her, but unsure how to deal with what he's just seen ---- or that one word: Traitor - fanfic five: Star Forge. ---- start with Trevano and Bastila, and Trevano has redeemed Bastila ---- Trevano goes off to fight Malak ---- Revan takes Bastila ---- Trevano returns ---- Reveal, fight, they think Revan is dead (but he's so not dead) ---- Trevano and Bastila are super confused. Bastila legit through Trevano was Revan. Trevano doesn't know who he is, and doesn't know whether to trust the villian who just claimed to be Revan. ---- So at the end of this, even though we've done a reveal, there's still uncertainty - fanfic six: Coruscant ---- Trevano and Bastila are shacked up and have been trying to see the Jedi Council for like a year ---- keep getting put off, finally get a meeting ---- Council fesses up on everything they did, but even they still don't know what's really what, or who Trevano really is ---- return to apartment. Revan has been there. Took the Revan mask, lightsabered up stuff. Stole the Hawk, T3, and HK-47. And made Canderous think he's Trevano, who Canderous thought was really Revan. ---- Revan creates Candalore, so he'll have the Mandalorians on his side ---- Revan crashes the Hawk and carefully feeds T3 info to unwittingly take to Kreia ---- Revan zaps every hyperspace route except the one to Malachor V, to make sure T3 meets up with Kreia ---- Revan's plan is for the Sith and Jedi to finish each other, he's confident Kreia will make that happen - fanfic seven: The Rakatan ---- Revan sends a Rakatan after Meetra, with a message from him (holo, shows Revan and everything) ---- Rakatan walks into the middle of Meetra's bar fight, she has to sort that out ---- Meetra returns to the Republic under whatever false impression that Revan gave her - fanfic eight: after KOTOR II ---- Bastila and Tevano have been playing it up like Tevano is gone doing the True Sith thing ---- they really want Revan to reveal himself ---- Meetra (and Atton?) confront Bastila and Tevano (they get lucky and Tevano is there, I guess?) ---- Meetra totally unloads on Tevano about Malachor V, and all the death, and using her, and everything she could possibly be mad about. Epic rant. ---- Bastila and Tevano are like ... 'um, yeah, so ... I'm really not Revan" ---- See above for what happens after - fanfic nine: conclusion on Lehon (In the above, Revan is less a behind-the-scenes puppet master, although there's a lot of that, but he's also actively doing stuff himself)
Overall theme will be identity - who is a person? Are they the sum of their past? Their destiny? Their choices? How much of who they are is who they decide to be, and how much is predetermined for them, either by the circumstances of their birth, their parentage, the institutions surrounding them and the allegiences they forge, their own personality? Can people become who they want to be?

Clone name will be some combination of Trask Ulgo and Revan. For example, Trevalgo = "TRask-REVAn-uLGO".

Here are a bunch of options: There are probably lots more.

Things that begin with "Rev", end with "ask", or contain the whole name "revan" seem too blatent. I want this to be slightly subtle, so even though it won't be a big secret, it'll still feel like his own name rather than a mashup. Chopping those out, I get:

Some of those are awkward or I just don't like them. That leaves:

Relgo and Tevano are tech companies, but sufficiently obscure. Trivago is a fairly prominent hotel website and, while spelled differently, sounds too much the same. Resk is ... well ... urban dictionary says it is not nice.

I think Tevano wins.
