Fan Fiction
I enjoy creative writing for its own sake. My day job as a software developer involves a lot of highly structured thinking. While this is challenging and (at least sometimes) enjoyable, it just doesn't scratch the same mental itch as truly creative work. I'm pretty much tone deaf and I can't paint or draw to save my life. But I'm not terrible with words, so writing is a nice creative outlet for me. I don't claim to be as good as an actual professional writer, and I don't ever expect to see my name on a book cover. But hopefully someone, somewhere will enjoy some of it. And if not, I enjoyed writing it.
Video games are a frequent source of inspiration for my short stories. Especially for role playing games, I find writing a short story about my character helps me really wrap my head around how to play them. And as I've been replaying KOTOR I and KOTOR II a lot lately, I've also been writing a lot about them.
Several of these are one-off little stories, but others are more ambitious and are spread across several chapters. I'm especially happy with my "Dark Meetra" series, which is probably long enough to consider a
novella. Written during a Dark Side playthrough of KOTOR II, the first chapter describes the events that led this version of the Exile back to known space, while the final three chapters describe the (highly non-canon) events that occurred after.
My even-more-ambitious "Connections" series follows the journeys of both main characters of my first-ever linked playthrough of KOTOR I and KOTOR II. In this playthrough, both games exist in my same head canon version of the Old Republic era. By the end, both main characters and companions from both games will be part of a combined ... well ... you'll have to read it to see.
My longest series (to date) is "Tevano", which started with a simple question I asked myself: "What if the big thing you learn in KOTOR I wasn't true?" This spilled into an entire linked playthrough of both games where things unfold very differently. The fanfic faithfully follows the actual games, but I intersperse fanfic chapters in various places throughout the game in ways that affect some of the interactions and outcomes from the fanfic reader's perspective. So, if you think you know what happened in the games (particularly KOTOR 1), you may need to think again! This fanfic includes a completely non-canon post-KOTOR-2 conclusion featuring both main characters and some companions from both games.
I'm currently (as of April 2024) working on "Betrayals", a somewhat shorter fanfic series tied to linked Dark Side playthroughs of both games. Like "Tevano", it started with a question. But this time, the question is "What if the big thing you learn in KOTOR 1 was not only true, but the main character knew it the whole time?" Should be fun.
